A Beginners Guide to Botox

Botox is the brand name of a popular neurotoxin used by cosmetic injectors.  It received FDA Approval in the late 1980s when it was discovered that Botox could effectively treat ailments such as blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye).  Cosmetic Injectors have been using Botox for years to successfully treat facial lines, forehead lines, smile lines, and crow’s feet.  Injected Botox blocks the signals from the nerve to the muscles, thus preventing them from forcibly contracting and tightening.  This causes facial lines and wrinkles to relax and soften.  More than 5 million Botox injections are administered each year.

Is Botox the Only Neurotoxin Available?
Botox is one of several different Neurotoxins on the market.  Each one behaves differently when injected into the muscle.  Therefore, patients with a wide range of cosmetic goals and/or concerns can uniquely benefit from each different Neurotoxin.  Other Neurotoxins include Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.  Your cosmetic injector will recommend the best product during your initial consultation.

How Quickly Can I Expect Results with Botox?
A typical Boxtox treatment can be completed in just 15 minutes during a single office visit.  Results begin to become noticeable in as little as 2 to 3 days.  Many patients get Botox treatments on their lunch hours and can return to work immediately afterwards with no side effects.

How Long Does Botox Last?
While results are different for each individual, you can expect your Botox treatment to last from 3 to 4 months.  It also depends on the amount of Botox that is injected as well as the treatment goals and lifestyle of the patient.

Are There Any Side Effects with Botox?
